Ahhh, Portland Oregon I know well. I sit here wishing I was back their right now; not only because its 100 degrees outside (here in Phoenix), not only to see some great friends, but because the people of Portland are good and we want to reward you Oregonians. Small Leaks is putting on one show in the Portland area prior to heading back down the 950 miles of the I-5 Interstate for another 365 miles of the I-10. It will be a most triumphant show because it will be the only one in the Northwest this year. So click here for the Small Leaks tour website or check them out on their facebook page to get updates of the show time.

Pretty much every show that is at the Yucca Tap Room is free and pretty much every show that Small Leaks plays at is worth paying money for. So, what does this Friday the 13th mean? Yes, crazy sh!t is happening. Music worth paying a lot of money for…being FREE! Come to the Yucca on Mill and Southern and see the following bands:

Come by and enjoy!!! I swear you will have this much fun!

This last weekend, Hoodlums hosted a number of local bands for their 3rd annual “Hoodstock” show. One of the bands was Small Leaks Sink Ships and despite the stage just big enough to host 3 of the bandmembers at most and the size of the venue, they still brought the same intensity. If you weren’t able to check out the show, here or a couple snapshots of the set.

If you were not fortunate enough to make it to the Small Leaks Sink Ships EP release show, you weren’t fortunate enough to get a personally designed EP Sleeve with the copy of their new EP. Every two to three days they show you a sneak peak of the work the put into them. Some of them were comprised of magazine covers, clippings, and some were even handdrawn. Regardless, all of them have been put together by hand by the members of Small Leaks and were worked on for many days on end.

To see some, other personal thoughts and any updated news, check out their blog.

You can follow this link to view a small piece of the documentary by Daniel Padilla. He does excellent work and this four minute clip lets you listen to one of Small Leaks tracks from the new EP and gives you insight to some of the questions you may have of the band. It talks about the band name, issues encountered along tenure of the band and an interveiw with drummer, London Van Rooy.

To find out more of the band, head to their homepage or to purchase the new EP you can simply go to ITunes.

So here are the order of events of what happened tonight:

-Got off work, screamed a happy scream as I left the door from my 8-5 (the people that claim 9-5 or full of sh!@)

-Met friends at the bar in preparation to the show at 8:30 (note friends that have and have not heard a song by Small Leaks)

-Drank beer, talked to friends, laughed, talked more, laughed, drove (responsible driver of course) to the Rhythm Room for the show

-Gave my pre-bought ticket to the dude at the front door, he gave me a ticket that was redeemable for a specially issued cd with personally made cover and entered the show

-Went to bar and got drinks for friends (laughed silently at the under 21 section, sorry!)

-Show started and Carol Ann and guest sounded phenomenal, (eagerly awaiting Small Leaks is an understatement)

-Witnessed a set by Small Leaks, another by Carol Ann, and then a closing set by Small Leaks

-At home now and listening to the cd and can’t believe the energy that was in the building tonight. I know it sounds cheesy to say that my heart felt as though it leapt from my chest an anticipation/excitement and then complete fulfillment/relief/excitement. I tried my best to not get caught up in the energy of the show, but I tried to weigh the excitement and feelings of the rest of the crowd. It was amazing…..simply that…..AMAZING. I know I may be a biased opinion, but I entered the Rhythm Room with a sense of urgency and excitement and nervousness (don’t know why, but still nervous). I left with the utter most happiness, the happiness that is equivalent to proposing to your fiance (nervous but ecstasy when it is a confirmed yes), the happiness that really is equal to only few moments in your life and the happiness that can not be described in a blog or a facebook post or a myspace status.

I’m not sure if anyone will read this but I had to write this the second I got home. You may be seeing this as fluff or an exasperation but this is as genuine as one person can be or at least as one person can write and express on a keyboard.

No link, no sales pitch, just pure happiness!

What can I say about the Yucca? It is by far my favorite spot to stop in and catch a show. Any weekend you can pop in and catch an act performing for a low fee of ……….FRRREEEEEE!!!!!!! Yes, free! The owner Rodney Hu is a man of the people. We put a show on their a year and half ago and he trusted us, give us free reign to the venue and kept the cover charge at FRRRRREEEEE!!!! He is superb to his bands (that is if you are good to him) and in turn gets a good turn out flooding the place with Tempe residents. Did I mention the shows their are free???

A few years ago I discovered the Yucca (late I know) and it sort of feels like a place your uncle would play at (wood panel walls, cheap PBR in tall cans, ya know), however during the week he gets traveling acts and always opens his door to the local acts as long as you do him well (bring people). He truly is a local supporter. They recently bought the place next door and turned it into a area to sit and drink local brews and micro brews from all over. Even if you are next door, you are more then able to hear the music playing on stage. The only thing constricting a person from seeing the band is a door from the main bar area to an area you could have you mom, girlfriend, anyone that may complain the music is too loud. He has created an environment that welcomes anyone and everyone (over the age of 21). The only real know is you must be over the age of 21 to attend a Yucca show. They have had outside concerts, have inexpensive drinks and great music most of the week. To see upcoming shows just click here to find out more. Go there and check it out. It’s on the corner of Mill and Southern.
